This includes data from Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) head-end systems, which collect smart meter reads; Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, which provide real-time data from grid sensors and substations; outage management systems (OMS); asset management systems (AMS); and external sources like weather forecasting services and geospatial data. This powerful data processing pipeline, often built using technologies like Apache Spark, transforms the disparate raw data streams into a rich, interconnected, and analysis-ready dataset that can be used to power the platform's various analytical applications.

The analytics engine is the "brain" of the platform, where a wide range of analytical techniques and machine learning models are applied to the prepared data to generate insights. This engine typically supports a spectrum of analytics capabilities. This starts with descriptive analytics (what happened?), which is used to create dashboards and reports that visualize historical energy consumption or asset failure rates. It moves on to diagnostic analytics (why did it happen?), which allows engineers to drill down into data to understand the root cause of an outage or a voltage anomaly. The most advanced and valuable capabilities are in predictive analytics (what will happen?) and prescriptive analytics (what should we do about it?). Predictive models are used for applications like load forecasting, predicting which assets are likely to fail, or identifying customers who are likely to adopt rooftop solar. Prescriptive analytics takes this a step further, recommending specific, optimized actions, such as the most cost-effective maintenance schedule or the optimal dispatch of energy storage assets to balance the grid.

The final layer of the platform is the application and visualization layer. This is the interface through which different users within the utility—from grid operators and asset managers to customer service representatives and executives—consume the insights generated by the analytics engine. This layer consists of a suite of role-based applications and interactive dashboards. An asset manager might use a dashboard that shows a map of all assets, color-coded by their predicted risk of failure. A grid operator might use a real-time dashboard that visualizes power flows and provides alerts for emerging grid congestion. A customer service application might provide a representative with a complete view of a customer's usage history and any recent outages affecting them. These user-friendly applications are critical, as they translate the complex outputs of the data models into intuitive visual formats and actionable recommendations that can be easily understood and acted upon by non-data scientists, ensuring that the power of analytics is accessible and impactful across the entire organization.
